The HSAA Varsity Angels started out their 2017 Nationals run with a solid 3-0 win over Denver, on a sunny day in Springfield.  The boys in red started out strong, applying offensive pressure from the opening whistle, getting the Denver side back on their heels.

Angus Herndon opened the scoring about midway through the first half, scoring from the left side.  Just prior to the halftime whistle, Denver was called for a foul in the box and Trevor Mrocheck netted the shot from the dot to make the score 2-0 at the half.

In the second half, HSAA kept up the pressure, and had clear advantages in time of possession and time spent in the opponent's end of the field.   Denver did have a few moments on their offensive side, but GK Zach Taylor booked his first clean sheet on the varsity side, with help on defensive saves by Darius Morgan and Ollie Wells.

Late in the second half, Ollie Wells scored the third and final goal on a rocket of shot from an extreme angle on the left side of the goal, smoking it past the Denver defender.  After that, despite a desperate push by the Denver attackers, the Angels held them off to maintain the 3-0 win.

Special shout-out for play that might not show up in the stat sheet:
Zach Taylor, for his first start between the pipes for the varsity side... and a very solid showing indeed!
